"Vanishing Acts" - Jodi Picoult After reading "My Sisters Keeper" by Picoult I wanted to keep reading all of her books (and she has quite a few.) This one tells the story of a woman, Delia, who is raising her daughter while living with her father. Delia has very few memories of her mother, as she died when Delia was very young. Until one day the police come and take her father away, then Delia's life begins to unravel -- and it turns out she's not who she thought she was. Neither is her father. This story is so gripping I could not put it down. Delia has to deal, not only with what her father has done but also with her fiance's alcoholism (he is her daughters dad). As the story unfolds Delia wonders if what her Father did was so terrible, and if she wouldn't have (or shouldn't do) exactly as her dad did. -- I totally recommend this book. Though i loved My Sister's Keeper more, this one was just as fantastic.
"P.S. I Love You" - Ceclia Ahern -- This is by the same author of the aforementioned "Love, Rosie" - so after reading that I was a bit skeptical about this one (even though EVERYONE I know kept saying they'd never cried so hard while reading a book). The last book I cried while reading was "A Walk To Remember" by Nicholas Sparks. So this book tells the story of a young woman who has lost her husband (to a brain tumor) -- they'd only been married a few years. Her husband, knowing he wouldn't live much longer, left her a letter for each month of the remaining year. It was cute -- the things he was telling her to do, to help her get on with her life. It was touching, but I can't say I cried (maybe I'm cold hearted - maybe the character just annoyed me - or maybe its just hard to related b/c i'm unmarried and have never lost someone that close to me). Nonetheless it was a good story, and very heartfelt. It is amazing to me that this is Ceclia Ahrens first novel and she was about my age when she wrote it (thats deep).
"The Time Traveler's Wife" - by Audrey Niffenegger. I bought this book as one of Border's 3 for 2 deal -- I thought I'd heard good things about it, and I was ready for a non-chiclit book. So this book tells the story of, obviously, the time travelers wife, but also of the time traveler himself. At first this book is a little hard to follow, b/c the concept of time travel (at least to me is a bit complex). It begins w/ Clare (time travelers wife) as a young girl and Henry (time traveler) visiting her from the future. The future where they are married. So it goes through her life w/ her having all these memories of him. Then eventually the two meet in "real time" (so they're the same age and no time traveling is involved). Of course she knows him, but he doesn't know her (yet). So they obvoiusly date and get married, and slowy he begins to have these memories of her as a little girl (as he time travels) -- the ones she's known all along. THe story tells of his struggle w/ the time travel (and how hard it is on his body) but also of Clare being alone for periods of time while he is gone (sometimes visiting her past, sometimes he goes to random dates/places). Its a great story, especially once you grasp the time travel concept (you just have to realize the past, present and future are all happening at once -- yeah, crazy). I definetly recommend this to anyone (male or female).
"Slightly Engaged" - by Wendy Markam - This is another book I got from Border's 3 for 2 rack. It's a total chiclit book - so be warned. This one tells the story of Tracey and her boyfriend Jack. They've been dating a couple of years and are also living togheter. Tracey feels they should be moving on in their relationship, as in they should be getting engaged. The book tells the entire story from Tracey's mind (down to every thing she is thinking - which is sometimes directed at the reader). Its a fun/cute book - that you know how it will end (as with most chiclit). I liked the main character - she really is "every girl" in the way that she thinks (as in, you think "maybe my boyfriend is planning something, maybe he'll do this or that -- then he doesn't) I blame much of this on too many chiclit books and movie. :) It's a quick easy read and I recommend it. Though I found out after reading it, it is 2nd in a serious (1st being Slightly Single and the 3rd being Slightly Settled). I'd like to read the others someday.
So that's what I've read over the past month (since it's been that long since I updated this thing. Now i'm reading Jodi Picoults new book "The Tenth Circle" - I'm only about 5 pages in so I don't have much of an opinion yet.
