I was pretty excited about this new book Baby Proof, because it focuses on a couple who do not want to have children. There really is a lot of stigma against these women. People usually refer to them as "childless" instead of "childfree." Many people see it as a very selfish thing -- when it's usually not. I really connected with the main character b/c she did like kids, she just didn't want any. For her it became a deal breaker with most men that she dated, until she finaly found a man who didn't want children either. They got married and were perfect together --- until 3 years later he decides he does want children. Obviously this isn't something you can compromise on, either you want them or you don't, so you either have them or you don't. The book started out really quick -- like the first few chapters you find out he doesn't want kids and they both become so angry with the other that the make a rash decision to get divorced. Most of the book focuses on her and her struggle to deal with the age old "what if" question. What if she just decided to have his baby b/c then it meant they could stay together. But what if she did and it didn't help and they still wound up apart but with a child.
I did love the main character, she seemed very strong considering the situation. Her husband I liked and hated at the same time. When she would remember all their good times, you understood why they were together. But the way he started acting after the divorce came across as very childish and very self centered.
So all in allI loved this story (not as much as her other books), but I'm not 100% sure about the ending -- it just seemed to "iffy" to me. But on a cool note we did get to see one of the characters from the Something series in this one, Ethan because he is a writer and this main character is an editor.
So I had the chance to meet Emily Giffin when she was in Naperville doing a book signing. She was very sweet and she talked a lot about this book and the last two. Apparently Something Borrowed has been optioned for a movie! YAY! And because i'm a big book nerd i had my photo take (a lot of other people did too though). Little fact, Emily is from Naperville - she graduated from Naperville North High School.
